What do Chinese consumers know about lighting technology? Or ask another question: how much do Chinese consumers think they know about lighting technology? Do they know how to purchase the corresponding watts number of lighting products according to the color temperature and lumens they need? Do they know that light has biological effects? In the “landvance international consumer research” survey, including a representative survey of more than 2000 Chinese consumers, people still lack enough understanding of many aspects of current and future lighting technologies. Landward Vance hopes to end people’s confusion about lighting through the international day tomorrow.

The United Nations Educational, scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced that May 16th is the “international tomorrow”, the purpose of which is to give people all over the world the importance of lighting and lighting technology. What level of knowledge do Chinese consumers think of their own knowledge of light? What caused such a serious problem? What do they think about the problems of future lighting technology? Recently, a representative study by Research Now, representing landward Vance, has provided answers to the above questions. “LED technology can bring a lot of benefits. But for consumers, how to choose a suitable light source or luminaire has become more and more complex. This is also an indisputable fact. Most consumers think they know a lot, but that’s not the case. 65% of Chinese consumers, in answering the questionnaire, expressed their full understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of various lighting technologies, or at least well understood, including the understanding of (intelligent) LED lighting products to the traditional incandescent lamps.

Landward investigation shows that consumers still have many misconceptions about lighting technology.

When asked about the problem of measurement units, for example, for those units that have long been printed on light sources and light fixtures, the cognition is immediately clear: 78% of Chinese consumers can connect Watt and electricity consumption correctly. For “color temperature” and “lumen” and other important units of measurement of LED products, only about half of the respondents (58% and 61%) are able to have the right cognition.

The reason for this problem is that “color temperature provides color information about light, such as daylight (greater than 5300K), white light (3300K to 5300K) and warm white light (less than 2700K), according to the general manager of Lin Xin, a large China region. Lumens in lumens tell people how much light is emitted by lamps. Therefore, for high-efficiency LED lighting products, the key value of luminance is not wattage, but lumen number.

It is worth noting that the accuracy rate of German respondents in identifying these units is lower than that in all other countries. Of all the respondents in Germany, only 33% could make the right choice among all the measurement units. Among respondents in the UK, France, Sweden, the United States, Canada, Brazil and China, the proportion of these measuring units could be correctly identified from 40% to 50%. The correct rate of respondents in Italy reached 55%, which was the highest among all respondents.

The three largest operators in China are expected to invest nearly $two hundred billion in the construction of 5G infrastructure. China Mobile has announced that it will set up a 5G experimental network in the major cities this year, and the current Tianjin network has achieved 100 times faster than the 4G. The ultra dense network of 5G era demands the demand of small base stations

The number of base stations in the 5G period will be greatly increased, which will increase the network cost of the operators, and the small base stations have the advantages of flexible deployment and small frequency interference, such as the deployment of space between 10~20 meters, and more than 500 meters in contrast to the Acer station deployment space, which is very suitable for hot spot coverage, or will become the 5G era base. It has the following advantages:

(1) power supply advantages: the combination of small base stations and street lamps can share charging devices, save energy, and solve the power supply problem of small base stations separately deployed.

(2) management intelligence: through the sensing device on the intelligent street lamp, it is convenient to monitor the running state and temperature of the small base station. It is found that the anomaly can be timely early-warning, and all kinds of monitoring data can be transmitted to the cloud at the same time, so it is convenient for analysis and utilization.

(3) dense coverage: as a single small base station is currently covered less than 200 meters, it is necessary to carry out intensive deployment to cover the blind spot completely, and the street lamps are evenly distributed and the distance is less than 100 meters, which can help small base stations to form dense coverage.

(4) save space: the combination of small base stations and streetlights saves the space needed for individual deployment, and greatly reduces the difficulty of coordination of base station deployment.

(5) blind spot coverage: along the highway and railway lines, often the signal coverage is not good. The installation of intelligent street lamps is conducive to the blind spot coverage.

At present, this model has been popularized overseas. TELUS, the Canadian operator, replaces shares with power companies and installs small base stations on the infrastructure such as the poles owned by the latter, and Vodafone, in collaboration with a Holland company with a bus station advertising power, uses the space of the bus station to install Small Cell, and the advertising company can not only get rent, but also use it. The installation of 5G base stations will drive 117 billion 600 million of the smart street market.

By the end of 2017, the three operators had built 4G Acer station to 3 million 890 thousand (including China Mobile 1 million 870 thousand, China Unicom 850 thousand, China Telecom 1 million 170 thousand).

Referring to the number of base stations corresponding to the coverage radius of the spectrum, we predict that the 5G Acer station is about 2 times as large as 4G, while the number of small base stations in the 3G era has reached 1.5-2 times the number of the macro stations in the reference of the foreign operators. A Purdue University LED team developed new material and the manufacturing process. It was reported that this new material could use solar energy as heat energy, more efficient while generating electricity. This innovation is a great step for the cost of competition between fossil fuel and solar thermal power generation.

 

‘It is cheaper than storing energy via battery if storing solar energy as heat’, Purdue’s Reilly Professor of Material Engineering Kenneth Sandhage said. The next step would be to reduce the cost of generating electricity from the sun’s heat, he added. This research at Purdue has co-operated with the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It was published on journal Nature.

In concentrated solar power plants, solar power is converted into electricity through the mirrors or lenses to concentrate the light onto a small area which will generate heat energy and transfer to a molten salt. Then, the heat from the molten salt is transferred to a working fluid, supercritical CO2 which will expand and spin a turbine for generating electricity.

This breaks down into 352 GW (up 2.5 percent) for hydro, 184 GW (up 12.4 percent) for wind, 174 GW (up 34 percent) for photovoltaic (PV) and 17.8 GW (up 20.7 percent) for biomass. Renewable energy accounted for 38.3 percent of the country’s total installed power capacity, a rise of 1.7 percentage points.

Power generation from renewable energy sources reached 1,870 TWh in 2018, an increase of 170 TWh and making up 26.7 percent of the country’s total. Hydro contributed 1,200 TWh (up 3.2 percent), wind – 366 TWh (up 20 percent), PV – 177.5 TWh (up 50 percent) and biomass – 90.6 TWh (up 14 percent).

Newly-added installed capacity for hydro power generation was approx. 8.54 GW. The lion’s share was found in Yunnan (3.92 GW), Sichuan (1.55 GW) and Guangdong (0.90 GW), with the three provinces combined contributing 74.6 percent of the total. The country’s average utilization rate of hydropower reached 95 percent during the year.

 Continuing its steady growth, newly-added installed capacity for wind power generation reached 20.59 GW in 2018, with new capacity in the central eastern and southern regions accounting for approx. 47 percent of the total. The wind curtailment rate averaged 7 percent, down 5 percentage points while in Jilin and Gansu provinces it declined more than 14 percentage points, and, in the provinces stretching across the north of the country – Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Xinjiang – the rates dropped over 5 percentage points.

 

Newly-added installed capacity for PV power generation reached 44.26 GW in 2018, the second highest in history. Of the total, 23.3 GW came from centralized PV power stations while the remaining 20.96 GW originated from distributed PV. The PV curtailment rate averaged 3 percent, down 2.8 percentage points. Curtailment issues mainly occurred in Xinjiang and Gansu provinces, which recorded PV curtailment rates of 16 percent and 10 percent respectively, down 6 percentage points and 10 percentage points.

 Newly-added installed capacity for biomass power generation reached 3.05 GW in 2018, bringing the country’s cumulative biomass capacity to more than 17.8 GW. Anhui (0.50 GW), Shandong (0.47 GW), Guangdong (0.42 GW) and Hunan (0.24 GW) provinces claimed the top four positions. Cumulatively, the four leading provinces were Shandong (2.58 GW), Zhejiang (1.80 GW), Anhui (1.67 GW) and Jiangsu (1.64 GW).

In 2019, China will continue to advance its new strategy focused on energy security. With the aim of generating 15 percent of its energy from non-fossil fuel sources by 2020 and 20 percent by 2030, the country plans to take proactive measures to further the expansion of facilities that can deliver high-quality renewable energy.

Clean energy companies Canadian Solar and Solarcentury have signed a deal for the development of two grid-connected solar systems in Spain.

Canadian Solar will provide Solarcentury with 500MW modules to develop 200MW Cabrera and 300MW Talayuela solar systems.

Solar led street light all in one

The 200MW solar plant will begin construction in summer 2019 in Alcalá de Guadaira, Seville. The plant will be connected to the grid in 2020 to power 105,000 households.

The 300MW solar project will be deployed in later in 2019 in the Extremadura region of Talayuela in Spain, for integration with the main grid in 2020 to meet the needs of more than 150,000 homes.
